A few days ago, I had the opportunity to sit down with David, the original founder of 690km. I talked to him about the journey of this movement and the philosophy behind it. David’s insights are invaluable, not just for understanding the origins of the initiative but also for inspiring our community of new and long-time supporters.
This week, I will be sharing some of David's insights regarding 690km, and next week, I will further share the challenges David encountered and our future directions in promoting 690km.
David shared that the idea for the 690km initiative emerged during his work building bamboo bikes. While many celebrate bamboo for its sustainability, he realized that the real impact lies in the behavior it promotes—cycling. The core message of 690km is to encourage people to integrate cycling into their daily lives, transforming it from a recreational activity into a sustainable lifestyle choice.
The name “690km” symbolizes the average carbon emissions linked to bike production, translating that into a goal for cyclists. By aiming for this distance, we can visualize our contributions to reducing carbon footprints. David’s vision is to motivate individuals to embrace cycling as a regular mode of transportation, emphasizing that small, consistent changes can lead to significant environmental benefits.
However, David acknowledged the challenge of altering people’s entrenched habits. Many still perceive cycling mainly as a leisure activity, and changing this mindset is essential for the initiative’s success. As the current main advocate for 690km, I feel it’s important to highlight David’s vision. His experience reminds me that our collective efforts can inspire a cultural shift towards cycling as a norm, not an exception.
I’m excited to share this journey and hope that both new and existing subscribers will join me in promoting cycling as a vital part of our quest for sustainability. Together, we can redefine transportation and embrace a healthier, greener lifestyle.
