I recently came across an insightful piece by Andrew Howard, Mervyn Tang, and Low Ping Yee, published in November 2021. This article presents a framework for understanding avoided emissions—an essential concept for capturing climate opportunities that traditional metrics might miss. The authors argue that many organizations fail to account for the positive impacts of their sustainability initiatives, leading to a skewed understanding of their actual environmental footprint.

They discuss practical methods for organizations to measure and report avoided emissions effectively. For instance, the article emphasizes the importance of quantifying emissions reductions from energy-efficient practices and the adoption of renewable energy sources. This understanding can empower companies to make informed decisions that align with their sustainability goals.

I decided to share this article because it highlights an often-overlooked aspect of emissions accounting. As a high school student, I find it inspiring to learn how companies can be proactive in addressing climate change. It motivates me to think about how even small changes can contribute to larger sustainability efforts. This ties into my mission at 690km, where I aim to promote effective eco-friendly practices and inspire actionable change.
